KZN Social Economy Development Programme

The three universities located within the province of KwaZulu-Natal (MUT, UKZN and UniZulu), in collaboration with the Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs, will be running the 2024 LED Champions Programme for social entrepreneurs. We therefore invite all local chambers of commerce, government, and the KZN community
to apply or nominate social entrepreneurs for the 2024 LED Champions Programme.

What is the KZN Social Economy Development Programme?

The KZN Social Economy Development Programme is essentially a social entrepreneurship development programme offered to social entrepreneurs also known as LED Champions to accelerate transformational change in their communities across KZN. Through a rigorous nomination and selection process, candidates who have existing enterprises that are making changes in their communities are selected to participate in the programme annually. The programme is based on a keen understanding of the particular challenges facing social entrepreneurs (across the globe) and modelled on an adaptation of best practice in both its curriculum and its delivery.

Candidates are exposed to cutting edge thinking and innovative practices in social entrepreneurship across the major areas required for the development and scaling of their social enterprises.

Who are potential LED Champions?

Potential LED Champions are active social entrepreneurs whose enterprises are making a social or environmental impact in their communities. Women, people with disabilities, military veterans and victims of the recent social unrest are encouraged to apply provided that they have a business that has an impact on society.

What will the KZN Social Economy Development Programme offer?

The Champions Programme is a 7-month development intervention that is designed to capacitate social entrepreneurs to scale their impact. It will offer the opportunity to work with fellow LED practitioners.

This will happen through participation in a series of work integrated learning to develop their organizations / ideas into sustainable social enterprises. This programme includes workshops on personal growth and development, human centered design thinking, innovation, entrepreneurship, legal structures, financial management, marketing, human resources, integrated supply chain management and assessing and measuring performance of the enterprise.

Successful candidates will be funded for this programme. Funding includes, accommodation, (for candidate who reside outside of Durban and Richards Bay) and course materials.

When does the programme run?

The programme runs as an action learning, interactive social lab comprising two-day sessions per month in a plenary followed by action in the field, reflection and implementation. The teaching is a mix of online and face to face sessions during the programme, scheduled from February to September 2024


Your choice of university cannot be guaranteed. You may be allocated to one of the three higher educational institutions in
KZN. Places are limited, apply early to avoid disappointment.


  • Fluency in English
  • An existing social enterprise in
    existence for a minimum of one
    years based in KZN
  • Matric or equivalent
  • South African citizen based in the
    province of KwaZulu-Natal
